Can I manage my storage unit while I’m living abroad?

Yes. Once it’s set up, your long-term storage looks after itself: payments are taken automatically every four weeks, your invoices arrive by email, and you can give someone you trust in the UK their own access to your unit through smart entry. A little preparation before you leave is all it takes.

Before you go

A few simple steps mean nothing needs your attention while you’re away:

  • Set up automatic payments by card or Direct Debit, so each payment is taken on its due date with nothing for you to do. If you’ll be using a card from a bank outside the UK, call us before you go and we’ll talk you through it.
  • Share access with someone at home. Through smart entry you can give a relative or friend their own access, for a set time or with no end date, using their mobile number. At Chipping Norton, which uses padlocks, you give them the key and access codes instead.
  • Check your alternate contact: someone who doesn’t live with you, whom we’d contact only if something urgent came up and we couldn’t reach you.
  • Check that your contents cover reflects everything in the unit, as it needs to stay in place the whole time you’re storing.

While you’re away

We email your invoice 5 to 7 days before each payment, so you can always see what’s coming. If a card expires or a payment doesn’t go through, we’ll contact you with instructions on how to update it, so keep an eye on your email.

If your phone number, email or address changes, or your alternate contact’s does, email us at hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk within 48 hours. When you’re in another time zone, email is often the easiest way to reach us anyway, and we’ll pick it up during office hours, Monday to Saturday.

Anyone you’ve shared access with can visit during access hours, 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, whether to collect something, add a box or meet a removals firm. Our team doesn’t take in deliveries or let crews in on customers’ behalf, so it’s always someone from your side who opens the unit.

Coming home

When you know your return date, email us with the date you’d like your storage to end. Notice is normally 14 days. Your helper can clear the unit for you if you’re not back yet, and once it’s empty and checked, we refund any days you’ve paid for but haven’t used.

If you’re in the Armed Forces and moving for a posting, our answer on storage for the Armed Forces and forces families has more.
