Top 10 Self Storage Tips

1. Choose the Right Storage Unit Size

One of the most common mistakes people make is renting a storage unit that’s the wrong size. Think carefully about what you plan to store before you commit to a specific size storage unit.

Here are some examples of what you could store in Wigwam storage units:

  • A 25 sq ft (2.3m²) unit is perfect for a few boxes or small household items, ideal for use as student storage.
  • Our +50 sq ft (4.6m²) units are often used for personal storage, including furniture storage during a move.
  • Larger units, like our +125 sq ft (11.6m²) units, are suitable for bigger homes or – most commonly –  business storage purposes.

2. Label Each Box Clearly

When packing boxes, always label them clearly. Include the contents and the room they belong to. This simple step makes it much easier to find the things that you need later, especially if you’re storing items for several months.

Tip: Use a permanent marker or tape a list on the side of each box for quick reference.

3. Protect Fragile Items

Fragile items like glassware, electronics or ceramics need extra care, especially during packing and transport. Wrap them in bubble wrap, blankets or towels before placing them in boxes. Consider using specialist boxes for delicate items, like mirrors, to prevent damage. Visit the Wigwam packaging shop to find high-quality boxes and more.

4. Use Uniform Boxes for Easy Stacking

Stacking boxes efficiently will save you money by helping you utilise vertical space in your unit. Try to use boxes of the same size wherever possible, for easy stacking. This also makes it easier to create aisles in your unit, so you can access items at the back without having to move everything around.

5. Avoid Storing Prohibited Items

While self storage units are a safe and flexible solution, it’s important to know that not everything can be stored inside. For the safety of your belongings and the facility, always avoid keeping the following prohibited items:

  •  Perishable goods or items which emit any fumes, smell or odour
  • Living creatures
  • Combustible or flammable materials
  • Chemicals
  • Illegal items

Before moving your belongings in, always check with the storage provider about what is and isn’t allowed. For a full list of restrictions and guidance, visit the Wigwam Storage FAQs.

6. Make an Inventory List

Before you lock up your storage unit, make a detailed inventory of everything inside.

This helps you:

  • Track stock and inventory
  • Avoid costly replacements of seemingly lost items
  • Make insurance claims easier if something is damaged or missing

Tip: Take photos of valuable items for added surety.

7. Think About Accessibility

Consider how often you’ll need to access your items and arrange your unit accordingly. Place items you need more frequently near the front and less-used items at the back.

This reduces the need to move heavy boxes or furniture around every time you visit your storage unit.

As mentioned above, making a storage inventory and using stackable boxes also play key roles in making your space more accessible.

8. Avoid Plastic Bags

Plastic is waterproof. That is what makes it so dangerous to use for self storage. Plastic traps moisture, which can lead to mould. When wrapping and packing, always use breathable materials to protect delicate items from dust, dirt and scratches.

9. Plan Your Move

Plan your packing and moving schedule carefully.

  • Make a list of items to be packed and transported
  • Pack in stages so you do not get overwhelmed or distracted
  • Label as you pack
  • When needed, bring along trolleys, straps and blankets for larger furniture
  • Visit your storage unit ahead of time to check accessibility and layout

10. Pack Strategically

Place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top. This prevents damage and makes stacking easier. Fill any gaps in your boxes with packing paper to prevent items from shifting during transportation.

Always dismantle any large furniture items beforehand. It makes furniture easier to handle and saves space in your unit. Also, remember to group items by room or category so unpacking is faster and more organised.
