Yes. You decide who can get into your unit, and you can share access through smart entry with anyone you choose, for a set period or with no end date. It helps when a relative is clearing a house with you, a colleague needs to collect stock, or a friend is looking after things while you’re away.
How to share access
You share access from smart entry on your phone, using the other person’s mobile number. They set up smart entry on their own phone, the same way you did, and can then let themselves into the building and your unit during access hours, normally 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. A few days suits a one-off job; no end date suits a business partner or a relative helping long term.
At Chipping Norton, where units are locked with a padlock, you share access by giving the person the keys and the access codes they’ll need.
Anyone who simply comes along with you, such as a friend helping you carry a sofa, doesn’t need anything set up.
If the person you’re adding doesn’t have a smartphone, or you’d like a hand, call us on 0800 2545585.
A few things to pass on
Before their first visit, make sure they have the site address and your unit number, and that they’ve set up smart entry before they travel. It’s worth them carrying photo ID too, as we may ask anyone on site to show it.
Give them access of their own rather than lending your phone, so it’s always clear who’s who.
The unit stays in your name
Billing and notice still run through you, and because the people you share with visit on your behalf, you’re responsible for what they do on site, just as if it were you. Choose people you trust and give them the basics: lock up every time they leave, and keep anything on the prohibited goods list out of the unit. If they’ll be adding things, check your replacement value still covers everything.
Removals crews and couriers
Our sites don’t take in deliveries, so someone from your side needs to be there while a removals crew or courier loads or unloads: you, or someone you’ve shared access with.
When things change
Access shared for a set period ends on its own. To take someone off sooner, for example when a member of staff leaves, call us on 0800 2545585.
If the account holder has died, please don’t use shared access in the meantime. Call us first and we’ll talk you through what happens next; there’s more in what happens to a storage unit when the renter dies.
If you’re booking a unit that more than one person will use, get a price online or call us on 0800 2545585 and tell us who’ll need access.
