A padlock is a detachable lock with a U-shaped bar (the shackle) that passes through a hasp or latch on a door and locks into the padlock’s body. It opens with a key or a combination. Where a storage unit takes a padlock, the customer fits their own and keeps the key or code. Closed-shackle and disc padlocks are shaped so the body shields most of the shackle, leaving less for bolt cutters to grip.
At Wigwam
Where your unit opens with smart entry, you don’t need a padlock: your phone opens your unit and locks it again, and your unit’s own alarm sets and unsets with it.
At Chipping Norton, you enter the building with your own PIN and secure your unit with a padlock. Bring your own, or buy a keyed or combination padlock at reception, open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm. If you’re booking a drive-up unit or an outdoor container, ask us how it locks when you book, so you know whether to bring a padlock on the day.
Our online Box Shop delivers padlocks to your door, including a 40mm brass padlock, a 50mm brass combination padlock with a code you can reset, and a heavy-duty container shutter padlock with an enclosed shackle, made for container doors.
Using your padlock
Fit your padlock to your own locking point and leave the separate point kept for our use free. If you’re not sure which is which, ask us and we’ll show you. Lock up whenever you step away, even for a quick trip back to the car.
If you lose your key, it happens. Call us and we’ll arrange access to remove the lock. There’s a charge for this, and you’ll need a new padlock if you’re carrying on with the unit. Keeping a spare key at home, or choosing a combination padlock, saves the trouble.
Not sure how your unit will lock? Call us on 0800 2545585 before moving day.
