Overlocking is when a storage operator pauses a customer’s access to their unit while a payment is outstanding, traditionally by fitting a lock of its own alongside the customer’s. Nothing is taken or sold: the belongings stay exactly where they are, and access returns once the account is settled. On units secured with a padlock, the spot kept for the operator’s lock is sometimes called the overlocking position.
At Wigwam
If a payment doesn’t go through, we’ll get in touch promptly and help you put it right, for example with a secure link so you can pay by card. Because we email your invoice 5 to 7 days before every payment, you’ll usually have a few days’ warning to check your card is up to date. If it’s something simple, such as an expired card, we’ll send you instructions to update your details.
Storage fees are paid in advance, so while a payment is outstanding our terms allow us to pause access to your unit until it’s settled. Your things stay safely in your unit in the meantime, and once the account is up to date, your access carries on as before. A late charge may apply, so it’s worth sorting quickly. If a debt were ever to stay unpaid, we would write to you formally before anything stored could be sold. We’d much rather never get anywhere near that, which is why we contact you promptly.
If money’s tight
Call us before the payment is due on 0800 2545585 and we’ll look at your options together. Moving to a smaller unit can lower what you pay every four weeks, and if you no longer need storage, notice is normally 14 days, with any unused days refunded once the unit is empty.
If your unit takes your own padlock, fit it to the fixing point meant for it, and ask us if you’re not sure which that is.
