An alternate contact is a second person, named by a customer when they book, whom a storage company can try in an emergency if it can’t get hold of the customer. It’s a backup line of communication, not a right of access: naming someone as an alternate contact doesn’t let them into the unit or change who’s responsible for the agreement.
At Wigwam
We ask everyone who books with us for an alternate contact. It’s a backup for emergencies: if something urgent comes up, such as a time when access to your unit is needed quickly, and we can’t reach you, there’s someone we can talk to. We only use their details responsibly and when necessary, and we never send them marketing.
We’ll ask for someone who doesn’t live at your address, with their name, phone number and home address, plus an email address if they have one. A relative or friend you trust, and who’s easy to reach, is the natural choice. Please tell them before you book and check they’re happy for you to share their details with us.
If their details change, or you’d like to name someone else, email us at hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk within 48 hours of the change, just as you would for your own details. That 48-hour rule comes from our storage terms on contact details.
How it differs from sharing access
An alternate contact can’t get into your unit. If you’d like a family member or colleague to be able to visit, you can share access through smart entry, for a set time or indefinitely, and they use their own phone. At Chipping Norton, which uses padlocks, you share access by giving them your key and access code. Someone with shared access is sometimes called an authorised user.
Not sure who to name? Call us on 0800 2545585 and we’ll talk it through.
