A sofa cover, in moving and storage, is a large sheath of polythene or fabric pulled over a sofa to keep dust, dirt, spills and handling marks off the upholstery while it’s moved and stored. It isn’t a fitted slipcover or throw, which stays on the sofa at home to change its look or protect it in daily use.

Plastic for the move, breathable in the unit
A polythene cover is ideal for moving day: it slides on easily and keeps off dirt, dust and scuffs. Once the sofa is in your unit, let it breathe:
- take the polythene off, or leave the open end loose, so air can move around the sofa;
- use a breathable cover instead, such as a furniture blanket, a cotton dust sheet or an old cotton bedsheet;
- stand it on a pallet or a few boards, with a small gap to the walls;
- keep boxes and heavy things off the seat and arms, where steady weight can leave dents.
Make sure the sofa is clean and completely dry before it’s covered, leather included, because damp that goes in with a sofa stays with it. On your visits, lift the cover now and then and feel the fabric underneath.
