A mattress bag (or mattress cover) is a large open-ended sleeve, usually polythene, that slides over a whole mattress to keep dust, dirt and handling marks off it during a move or in storage. Using it well in storage
Polythene keeps dirt out, and it can keep moisture in too, so a bag works best with a little care:
- Dry first. Vacuum and air the mattress, and make sure it is completely dry before it goes in the bag, especially after a wet moving day.
- Don’t seal it. Once it’s in your unit, leave the open end of the bag open, or swap it for a cotton sheet or other breathable cover for a long stay, so any moisture can escape.
- Keep it off the floor. A pallet, boards or battens underneath let the air move.
- Nothing on top. Steady weight can leave dents, so give the mattress its own space.
