A single-wall box is a cardboard box made from one layer of corrugated (fluted) card between two flat sheets. It’s lighter and cheaper than a double-wall box, and fine for posting light items or a short move, but it crushes more easily under weight and softens faster if it gets damp.
At Wigwam
Every box in our online Box Shop is double-walled, because in storage a box has to carry the weight of the boxes above it for weeks or months, not just survive a van ride. Free boxes from shops are often single-wall: they’re fine for light things, but put them at the top of a stack rather than the bottom.
Single-wall or double-wall?
| Single-wall | Double-wall | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Light loads | Heavy loads and stacking |
| Best for | Bedding, cushions, light toys | Books, kitchenware, anything at the bottom of a stack |
| In storage | Top of the stack | Base of the stack |
Whichever you use, pack boxes full so they don’t sag, keep them dry, and stand them off the floor.
