Packing tape

Packing tape is wide, strong adhesive tape, usually about 50mm across, made for sealing cardboard boxes so the flaps hold under weight. It’s different from household sticky tape or masking tape, which are narrower and not made to hold a loaded box shut.

At Wigwam

Our Box Shop sells two kinds, both 50mm wide and delivered to your door:

  • buff solvent tape, a light-brown tape with a strong solvent adhesive, made for sealing heavy or overfilled boxes;
  • kraft paper tape, paper-backed, recyclable and easy to tear by hand, so you don’t need scissors or a dispenser.

If you’re using the buff tape, a tape dispenser makes sealing a stack of boxes much quicker. A roll of tape also comes in each of our moving kits, with boxes and a marker pen. Our Burton, Bath, Chipping Norton and Dorking sites sell packaging in store during office hours too.

Using it well

  • Tape the bottom of every box before you fill it in an H shape: one strip along the middle seam and one along each edge seam.
  • Add extra tape to the base of heavy boxes, such as books and kitchenware.
  • Fill the box to the top, close the flaps flat so the next box sits level, then tape the top in an H too.
  • Press the tape down firmly along its whole length so it grips.

A well-taped, full box keeps its shape under the boxes above it, which makes for a safer, steadier stack in your unit. If you’re not sure how much to order for your move, call us on 0800 2545585 and we’ll help you plan.
