As a rough guide, plan on around 25 to 40 boxes for a one-bedroom flat, 40 to 60 for a two-bedroom flat and 60 to 80 for a furnished three-bedroom house. Our moving kits hold 10, 25 or 40 boxes, so most homes need one kit plus a pack or two of ten.
Boxes by home size
Those numbers are the boxes our room-by-room size guide allows alongside the furniture in the unit each home usually fills:

Lots of books, a big kitchen or a full loft will push the count up.
Which kit fits your home
- Student Moving Kit: 10 boxes (5 medium, 5 large), tape and a marker pen. Right for a room, halls or a studio.
- Standard Moving Kit: 25 boxes (10 medium, 10 large, 5 tall), tape, a marker pen and bubble wrap. Covers a smaller one-bedroom flat; add a pack of ten for a fuller one.
- Large Moving Kit: 40 boxes (15 medium, 15 large, 10 tall), tape, a marker pen and bubble wrap. Covers most two-bedroom flats. For a three-bedroom house, add two to four packs of ten.
Packs of ten medium, large and tall boxes are sold separately, so you can top up whatever kit you choose.
Which box for what
- Medium (457 × 330 × 330mm): heavy things such as books, kitchenware, tools and electronics. A smaller box stays light enough to lift.
- Large (450 × 450 × 500mm): clothes, bedding, towels, cushions and bulky but light things.
- Tall (450 × 450 × 750mm): lamps, rolled rugs, curtains, linen and awkward shapes.
- Wardrobe boxes: hanging clothes, straight from the wardrobe to the rail.
For storage, sturdy boxes of similar sizes stack best. Keep each one light enough for one person to carry comfortably, and label it on more than one side.
Count the easy-to-forget rooms
Count kitchen cupboards, the loft, the garage and the shed properly, and keep a few spare boxes back for the last day’s bits.
