Unit dimensions

Unit dimensions are a storage unit’s measurements: length and width, which multiply to give the floor area, plus height and the size of the door. Units are usually sold by floor area alone, so two units of the same size can be different shapes, one long and narrow, another nearly square. That’s why a long sofa or tall wardrobe needs checking, even in a unit with plenty of floor.

At Wigwam

We list our indoor units by floor area, in square feet and square metres, and sizes are approximate. Rather than leave you guessing, we check the fit for you: measure your longest, widest and tallest pieces, call us on 0800 2545585 with the figures, and we’ll check them against the unit you’re looking at and its door before you book.

Our drive-up containers are listed by footprint as well as area:

ContainerWhere
80 sq ft (10ft x 8ft)Chipping Norton
160 sq ft (20ft x 8ft)Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour
320 sq ft (40ft x 8ft)Warminster

At Lincoln, some second-floor units are listed as restricted height, so if height matters, ask us before you book.

Measuring what has to fit

  • Measure furniture at its longest, widest and tallest points, including legs, castors and cornices.
  • For anything you’ll turn through a doorway, measure the diagonal too.
  • If your unit would be upstairs, mention your longest piece so we can check it will get there by lift or stairs, or look for a ground-floor unit instead.
  • Storing business stock? Tell us your pallet or shelving footprint and height.

If you’re between two sizes, our room-by-room size guide can help, and we can talk you through both, and if your needs change after you move in, you can switch to a bigger or smaller unit when one’s free.
