Measure each large piece at its longest, widest and tallest points, and take the diagonal for anything you’ll need to tilt through a doorway. Then send us the figures: we’ll check them against the unit you’re looking at and its door before you book, so nothing gets stuck on moving day.
What to measure
You only need a tape measure and a few minutes. For each big item, write down:
- Length, width and height at the widest points, including legs, feet, castors, handles and any cornice on top.
- The diagonal of sofas, wardrobes and tall cabinets. Tilting a piece often lets it through a gap that its straight-on height wouldn’t.
- Whether it comes apart. Bed frames, table legs, sofa feet and wardrobe tops that unscrew save space and make doorways easy.
Then list the rest roughly: how many boxes, and anything long, such as a rug, a mirror or a headboard.
Will it fit through the door?
Door and corridor sizes vary between our sites and units, so rather than guess, call us on 0800 2545585 with the measurements of your largest pieces. We’ll check them against the unit you’re interested in and its door opening. If a piece would be tight, we can suggest a different unit, a ground-floor unit, or one of our drive-up units at Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour or Warminster, where you can load straight from the van.
If your unit would be upstairs, mention your longest item too, so we can check it will get there by lift or stairs.
Turning measurements into a unit size
Square footage is floor space, but you can stack upwards, so:
- stand mattresses and sofas on their side or end where it’s safe;
- put the large furniture in first, against the back wall;
- stack sturdy boxes on top of solid pieces, heaviest at the bottom.
Our team are experts at working out the space you need. Tell us your list and your biggest measurements, and we’ll suggest the right size. Our room-by-room size guide is another place to start. If it turns out you need more or less room later, you can move to a different unit when one is free.
