As a rough guide, a 75 sq ft unit holds the contents of a two-bedroom flat with modest furniture, or a fuller one-bedroom flat with a dining table, a large sofa or white goods. Packed well, that can mean two or three beds, sofas, a dining table and chairs, white goods and 30 to 50 boxes.
How big is 75 square feet?
Seventy-five square feet is the floor area, about 7 square metres: three-quarters of a single garage, or half as much again as a 50 sq ft unit. Because you can stack upwards, a well-packed 75 sq ft unit takes more than most people expect from the floor size alone.
What a 75 sq ft unit suits
- Moving out of a two-bedroom flat, or a one-bedroom flat with plenty of furniture.
- A gap between homes, when the beds, sofa, table and boxes all need a safe place for a while.
- Decluttering before a sale, so rooms look bigger for viewings.
- Clearing two rooms at once, for a renovation for example.
If you’re storing boxes only, our size guide puts a 75 sq ft unit at around 40 to 60 boxes.
75 or 100 sq ft?
Many people picture everything laid out flat and book a bigger unit than they need, when stacking upwards would have done. The two things most likely to push you up to 100 sq ft are two or more large pieces that won’t stack or come apart, such as a big sofa and a dining table, or a fuller home with all its white goods. If either sounds like yours, ask us to compare the two sizes for your list.
Getting the most into it
- Take beds and tables apart, and tape the screws to the frame.
- Stand mattresses on their edge against a wall.
- Put the large furniture in first, against the back wall, and stack boxes on solid pieces where it’s safe.
- Leave a narrow walkway if you’ll be visiting often, with the things you’ll want first near the door.
