Do I have to be there on moving-in day?

It doesn’t have to be you in person, but someone from your side does need to be there. If you’re tied up at the new house, a friend, relative or colleague you trust can meet the van, and you can give them their own access through smart entry before the day.

Why someone from your side

Your unit is private: only you, and the people you choose, can open it. That’s what keeps your belongings safe, and it also means our team can’t open your unit for a removals crew or take in a delivery on your behalf. So whoever unloads, someone from your side needs to be there to open up, see everything in and lock up afterwards.

Giving someone access for the day

Shortly before your move-in date, we’ll text you how to set up smart entry on your phone. Once it’s working, you can share access with anyone you like using their mobile number. They’ll need smart entry on their own phone too, and you can give them access for just the day or for as long as you need.

A few things make the day go smoothly for your stand-in:

  • Set it up early. Share access a day or two ahead, so there’s time to sort out any hiccups.
  • Bluetooth and location on. Smart entry needs both switched on to open the doors and your unit.
  • Bring photo ID. We may occasionally ask anyone on site to show who they are.
  • Know the hours. Access is 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, so book the van early enough to finish in time.

At our Chipping Norton site, units are secured with a padlock rather than smart entry, so you’d give your stand-in the padlock key and the access codes instead.

What only you can do

Booking is in your name, so a few things are for you to do: your ID check, your first payment and signing your storage agreement. You can do all of these before the day.

A quick word for your stand-in

They’ll be acting for you, so it helps to brief them. Ask them to keep anything flammable, such as gas bottles, paint or fuel, out of the unit, to take care with doors and walls as things go in, and to make sure your unit is locked when the van leaves. Every unit has its own alarm, and our security team investigates if one goes off.

If you can’t be there for your very first visit, or you’d simply like to talk it through, call us before the day on 0800 2545585 and we’ll help you get everything ready. If you’re moving on a weekday, we’re easy to reach by phone if anything comes up. Not booked yet? Get a price online.
