Cubic feet

Cubic feet (cu ft) measure volume, the amount of space inside something, rather than its floor area. You work it out by multiplying length by width by height, all in feet. A box 2ft long, 1.5ft wide and 1.5ft high holds 4.5 cubic feet. Van capacities and some warehouse fees are given in cubic feet or cubic metres.

At Wigwam

We list our units by floor area, in square feet and square metres, and you pay for the floor every four weeks. You can stack upwards, so the height of the unit is free space: a well-packed unit holds far more than its floor area suggests.

To make the most of the height:

  • use sturdy boxes of a similar size, heaviest at the bottom, so stacks stay straight;
  • stand mattresses and sofas on their side or end where it’s safe;
  • take beds and tables apart;
  • use freestanding shelving for smaller items, without fixing it to the walls.

Unit heights vary between sites, so if something tall has to fit, call us with its height and we’ll check.

Comparing prices

Some storage options, such as fulfilment warehouses, charge by the cubic foot of stock each month. When you compare, work out the total you’d actually pay for your stock, not just the rate.
