Square feet

A square foot (sq ft) is a unit of area: the area of a square measuring one foot on each side, about 0.093 square metres, so one square metre is about 10.8 sq ft. Storage units are usually sized in square feet of floor area. The figure describes the floor only: the same area can be long and narrow or nearly square, and it tells you nothing about height.

At Wigwam

We list our units by floor area, in square feet and square metres, from small lockers up to units big enough for a whole house or business stock. Sizes are approximate, so if a long or tall item has to fit, call us on 0800 2545585 with its measurements and we’ll check it against the unit before you book.

Bigger units cost less for each square foot. On our October 2026 price lists, the middle price worked out at about 85p per square foot a week for a 25 sq ft unit, falling to about 45p for a 200 sq ft unit. Every four weeks, that’s a middle price of about £85 for 25 sq ft, £133 for 50 sq ft, £228 for 100 sq ft and £360 for 200 sq ft. Prices change often, so get a price online for today’s figure at your nearest site.

Choosing by what you store

A bigger unit can look like better value per square foot, but you still pay for the whole unit, so the cheapest choice is the smallest size that fits. Start from your things rather than the number, as our room-by-room size guide does:

  • list the furniture and larger items, room by room;
  • estimate how many boxes you’ll have;
  • measure anything big or tall, such as a sofa or wardrobe.

Packing upwards saves floor, so a well-stacked unit can be smaller than you’d think. Tell us what you’re storing and our team will help you work out the right size. If your needs change after you move in, you can switch to a bigger or smaller unit when one’s free.
