Licence to occupy

A licence to occupy is permission to use a space for an agreed purpose on the owner’s terms, without becoming a tenant. The owner keeps control of the property, and the person with the licence has the right to use the space for that purpose.

At Wigwam

Every storage agreement with us is a licence, not a lease or tenancy. It lets you use and get to your own unit to store your belongings, while we look after the building around it.

The unit is yours to use. Only you have access to it, and you decide who else can get in. Each unit has its own lock and its own alarm, and you can come and go seven days a week.

Because we look after the building, we can carry out repairs, deal with an emergency or keep the site safe for everyone without waiting on each customer’s permission. If we ever needed to move you to another unit, it would be one at least as big as yours, at the same fee, and we’d let you know first.

Why a licence keeps storage flexible

A licence is what lets storage work without a long tie-in. The minimum term is two weeks, and after that you stay for as long as you need. When you’re ready to leave, you email us your end date, normally with 14 days’ notice, and we refund any unused days once the empty unit has been checked.

A licence doesn’t take away your rights as a customer: if you’re storing as a private individual, you have the same consumer protections as with any other contract. A unit is for storage, so it can’t be lived in or used as an address, but business stock, tools and archives are welcome.
