You can hand your unit on: just ask us, and in most cases we can move it into the other person’s name while everything stays exactly where it is. If you’d rather keep the unit and let someone else use it, you can share access with them instead. What you can’t do is sublet it, rent out space in it, or pass your agreement on yourself.
Why we look after the changeover
Your storage agreement is with you by name. The rent, the notice and the contents cover all sit with the person on the agreement, so we always know who is responsible for what’s in each unit and that it’s covered. That’s why a handover goes through us rather than between the two of you, and why we can’t allow anyone to pay you for space in your unit.
Handing the unit on
If you’re moving away, or a relative or friend wants to take the unit over, call us before you make any plans. Tell us who is taking over and we’ll set out what we need from each of you. From the changeover, the new account holder:
- pays the storage fees;
- needs contents cover in their own name, through our contents protection or their own policy;
- gets their own smart entry access.
Any balance on your account is squared up as part of the changeover. Ask us at the same time what their price and agreement will be, so there are no surprises for either of you.
If they’d prefer a different size or a different site, it’s often simpler for them to book their own unit and for you to give us notice on yours.
Keeping it, and sharing access
If the unit is staying yours and you just want a partner, a grown-up child or a colleague to be able to get in, there’s nothing to transfer. You can share access through smart entry with anyone you choose, for a set period or with no end date. At Chipping Norton, which uses padlocks, you share access by giving them the key and access codes. You stay the account holder, so you remain responsible for what happens in your unit.
If two of you want to be named on the agreement together, rather than one holder and one person with access, our terms do provide for joint customers. Ask us when you book.
Businesses changing hands
If you’re selling your business, or a partner is taking over, ask us to move the unit into the new owner’s name when the sale completes, so the person on the agreement is the person who owns what’s inside.
To hand a unit on, call us on 0800 2545585 or email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk and we’ll talk you both through it. If the other person would rather have a unit of their own, they can get a price online.
