Legal liability is a legal duty to pay for loss, damage or injury you cause, for example through carelessness (negligence) or by breaking a contract. Insurance that pays for this is called liability cover, and it is different from cover for your own belongings.
At Wigwam
In a storage building, the simplest protection for everyone is that every customer’s belongings are insured, through our contents protection or their own policy. So if something happens to your things, you claim on your own cover. Our contents protection lists burst pipes and water leaks among the things it covers, and that includes, for example, a leak from a neighbour’s freezer that wasn’t properly defrosted.
We look after the building around your unit: repairs, emergencies and keeping the site safe for everyone. Every unit has its own alarm and lock, our CCTV is monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company, and if you store with us as a private individual, you have the same consumer rights as with any other contract.
What you’re responsible for
You’re responsible for what you store and how it’s packed, which is why a few simple habits matter: empty and fully defrost a fridge or freezer before it goes in, keep fresh or opened food out so nothing attracts pests, and leave anything on our prohibited items list at home.
Our contents protection is cover for your own belongings, not liability cover. If you’d like protection in case your belongings ever damaged someone else’s things or hurt someone, check whether your home, business or public liability insurance covers it. If you have a question about any of this, call us on 0800 2545585 and we’ll talk it through.
