How do I make a claim if something in my unit is damaged?

We’re sorry, finding something damaged is upsetting, and we’ll help you through it. Take photos before you move anything, call us on 0800 2545585, then email us asking us to make a claim, and we’ll pass it to our insurer promptly. If you have your own insurance instead, take the same first steps and claim with your insurer directly.

What to do first

  1. Take photos before you touch anything: the damaged items, the whole unit, and the door and lock. For water, photograph where it came from and how far it spread.
  2. Keep the damaged items. Don’t throw anything away or clean it up until you’ve checked with us or your insurer. Move dry things away from any wet area so nothing else is spoiled.
  3. Call us on 0800 2545585 as soon as you can. Tell us what you’ve found, and ask whether our CCTV or your unit’s alarm recorded anything that might help.
  4. If anything was stolen, report it to the police too, and keep the crime reference number.

Claiming on our contents protection

Once you’ve called us, email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk asking us to make a claim. Your written request is what starts it, so it’s worth sending the same day. We’ll notify our insurer promptly, and we, the insurer or its loss adjuster may ask you for photos, receipts and other details.

Our contents protection covers things like burst pipes and water leaks, theft involving forced entry, fire, storm and malicious damage, and claiming on it won’t affect the no-claims record on your home insurance. Settlement is new for old, with a £50 excess. What the insurer pays for your belongings comes to you, less anything outstanding on your storage account. Because the payout is based on the replacement value you declared, it’s reduced in proportion if that value was lower than the true cost of replacing everything.

The summary of insurance you received when you took the cover has the full details, and we can talk you through it.

Claiming on your own insurance

Contact your insurer as soon as you can and follow their claims process. Let us know too, as your insurer may want details of the incident from us.

Helpful for any claim

Receipts, bank statements and photos taken when you packed all help show what you had and what it was worth. An inventory with rough values, kept at home, makes it much quicker.

If you think damp is the cause, our guide to whether contents protection covers damp and mould explains how that works.

Whatever has happened, call us on 0800 2545585 and we’ll help you take the next step.
