Yes. Our contents protection covers the goods you store with us, business stock included, and it’s based on the value you declare: what it would cost you to replace your stock today. If you’d rather use your own business insurance, you can, as long as it covers stock kept in a self storage unit.
Getting your stock value right
Declare your stock at what it would cost you to replace it at today’s prices. That’s not your selling price, and it’s not what you originally paid.
The figure matters, because if the value you declare is lower than the true value, a claim is paid in proportion: declare half of what your stock is worth, and you’d get back half of a loss. If your stock rises and falls through the year, keep the figure in step with it. Before a busy season, when more stock is going in, just call us and we’ll talk you through raising it. Our guide to how much contents cover you need shows how to work it out.
What the cover is there for
Your cover starts the moment your stock goes into storage and runs until you take it out. It includes fire, storm, burst pipes or water leaks, theft involving forcible entry or exit, and malicious damage.
It’s there for the stock itself. Sales or profit you might lose while you replace it are a question for your business insurer, so if your business relies on that stock, it’s worth asking them about cover for a pause in trading.
Using your own business insurance
You’re welcome to use your own policy instead. Ask your insurer whether it covers stock in a self storage unit, as well as at your premises or on the road, and for the full value. If you’re waiting to hear, take our contents protection when you move in, so your stock is protected from day one. Send us proof of your own cover within 14 days of moving in and we’ll refund the contents protection charges in full.
Before your stock moves in
Your unit has its own alarm, and our sites are watched by CCTV, monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company. Our page on storing business stock with Wigwam covers how units work for trade use. The same list of items we can’t store applies to every customer, and for a business that mostly means anything flammable, such as aerosols. Our guide to flammable stock explains more.
If your stock is unusual or especially valuable, call us on 0800 2545585 before it goes in and we’ll talk through your cover with you. When you’re ready, get a price online and add your stock value to see the cost straight away, or email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk.
