Exclusions are the parts of an insurance policy that name the losses, causes or items it won’t pay for, even where the rest of the cover applies. Reading them alongside the list of what is covered tells you what the policy will really do for you.

At Wigwam

Our contents protection is made for belongings in storage. It covers loss or damage from fire, lightning and explosion, storm, burst pipes or water leaks, theft involving forcible entry or exit, malicious damage, and moths, insects or vermin that come in from outside.

The exclusion most worth knowing about is atmospheric or climatic damage. That’s the gradual damp that builds up from humid air and condensation, or from things that were slightly damp when they went in, and the mould it can cause over time. It’s also the one you can do most about: pack everything clean and completely dry, use breathable covers rather than plastic bags, and leave a little space between your things and the walls so air can move.

Theft is covered where there’s forcible entry or exit. Every unit has its own alarm and lock, and if your alarm goes off when you’re not on site, our security team investigates.

The summary of insurance you receive when you take the cover sets out the full list, and we’re happy to go through it with you on 0800 2545585.

Exclusions and prohibited items are different

An exclusion is something the policy won’t pay for. A prohibited item is something that can’t be stored at all, such as flammable liquids, explosives or firearms, whatever cover you have. Our list of prohibited items explains what can’t go in and why.

If you use your own insurance instead of ours, read its exclusions too: home policies vary on cover for possessions away from home, so check yours covers a self storage unit and for the full value.
