Authorised user

An authorised user is a person the account holder has allowed to get into their storage unit, usually with access set up in that person’s own name. The unit and the agreement stay with the account holder. An older word for the same idea is key holder: someone trusted with a key to the unit.

At Wigwam

Only you, and the people you choose, can get into your unit. With smart entry, you share access from your own phone using the other person’s mobile number, for a set length of time or with no end date. They set up Storage Smart Entry on their own phone the same way you did, and from then on their phone opens the doors and your unit during access hours, normally 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. It’s handy for a partner, a relative helping with a move, or a colleague collecting stock.

At Chipping Norton, where units use padlocks, you share access by giving the person the keys and access codes they’ll need. If someone you want to add doesn’t have a smartphone, call us and we’ll help.

Access shared for a set period ends on its own. To take someone off sooner, for example when a member of staff leaves, call us on 0800 2545585.

What it means for you

An authorised user can get in, but the unit stays in your name: billing and notice still run through you. Because they visit on your behalf, you’re responsible for what they do on site, just as if it were you, so share access with people you trust. Give each person access of their own rather than lending your phone, so it’s always clear who’s who. We may ask anyone on site for proof of identity, so it helps if they carry photo ID.

Anyone who simply comes along with you, such as a friend helping carry a sofa, needs nothing set up.

If the account holder has died, please don’t use shared access in the meantime. Call us first and we’ll gently talk you through what happens next.
