Heated storage

Heated storage is storage space warmed by a heating system, mainly to protect belongings from frost and severe cold. It differs from climate-controlled storage, which aims to hold a unit within a set temperature and humidity range all year, cooling as well as heating where needed.

At Wigwam

We offer standard self storage: clean, dry and secure units, with our indoor units purpose-built inside our buildings, out of the wind and rain. They aren’t heated or cooled, so the temperature inside follows the seasons to some degree. For most household belongings that’s no problem, because in the UK the thing to watch is damp more than cold, and careful packing takes care of it:

  • drain anything that holds water, such as a washing machine or dishwasher, because leftover water can freeze in a cold snap and damage it;
  • defrost and dry fridges and freezers, and leave the doors ajar;
  • pack everything clean and completely dry, and keep it off the floor with a small gap at the walls;
  • let electronics that have been cold warm up to room temperature at home before you switch them on.

To keep everyone’s belongings safe from fire, portable heaters can’t be used in units, and units have no power sockets, so nothing is ever left running.

Storing something sensitive?
