Off-gassing

Off-gassing is when a product releases chemicals or smells into the air, which is why new furniture, mattresses, carpets or paint can smell strongly for a while. Some materials also give off fumes as they age or break down, and in a closed space a smell can build up and spread to things nearby, such as fabrics and paper.

At Wigwam

Units sit side by side in shared buildings, so anything that gives off fumes or smells can’t be stored, to protect everyone’s belongings, yours included. That covers things like paint, solvents, fuel, cleaning products and strongly scented stock.

For everyday things, a few simple steps help:

  • air new furniture, mattresses and rugs at home for a few days before they go into storage;
  • make sure everything is clean and completely dry, as damp is a common cause of musty smells;
  • leave mothballs and chemical air fresheners at home;
  • use breathable covers rather than sealed plastic, so air can move.

If you’re not sure whether something can go in, email the product name or a photo of the label to hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk, or call us on 0800 2545585, before moving day.
