What happens to my broadband contract when I move?

Your contract doesn’t end just because you move: if your provider offers the same service at your new address, you can ask to take it with you, though you might pay a small fee to move it. If they can’t, or you’d rather switch, you may have to pay a fee to leave early, so it pays to ask your provider as soon as you have a moving date.

If your provider covers your new home

Ask them to move the service to your new address and book the start date for the day you move in, or as close as you can get. Some providers charge a small fee to move a service. Before you agree, check the speeds available at the new address with Ofcom’s broadband and mobile checker, so you know you’re getting what you need there.

If they can’t offer the same service

You might have to pay a cancellation fee to leave your contract early if your provider can’t give you the same service in your new area. The same can happen if you’re moving into a rental where broadband is already included and you still have a contract of your own. Citizens Advice suggests explaining your situation to your provider, because they might reduce or remove the fee.

If you’re out of contract, or want to switch

If you’re out of contract, switching provider can help you save money, and a move is a natural time to look. To change provider, you’ll need to cancel your current contract and arrange a start date for the new service in time for when you move. If you use an email address your provider gave you, check whether you can keep it before you switch, and set up a new one if you can’t.

If you’ve signed up to a new contract online or by phone in the last 14 days, you can usually cancel it for free during that cooling-off period.

If the new connection is late

If your provider is signed up to Ofcom’s automatic compensation scheme and promised to start your new service on a set date but doesn’t, you should get money back without having to ask: £6.46 for each calendar day of delay in October 2026. If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or certain other benefits, ask about a social tariff too, which is a cheaper broadband deal.
