Where should my furniture go if I move back in with my parents to save?

Keep the pieces you’ll want in your next home and that would cost more to buy again than to store, and let the easily replaced things go. If your parents have room, use it; if not, a small storage unit can hold the keepers until you get your own keys.

Moving home to save is a smart step, and it’s worth making sure the savings aren’t spent twice: once on storage you didn’t need, and again on furniture you sold and then had to replace.

Sort it into three piles

  • Keep: a good bed and mattress, a sofa you love, a solid wardrobe or table, anything inherited or hard to find. Measure the big pieces first, so you only keep what will fit a first flat or house.
  • Sell or give away: flat-pack you could buy again easily, anything worn out, and pieces you only bought to fill a rental.
  • Not sure yet: these are the ones to store for now and decide on later.

Weigh storage against replacing

Start with how long you expect to save for. Then compare what storage would cost for that time with what the keepers would cost to buy again.

On our October 2026 price lists, the middle price every four weeks was £85 for a 25 sq ft unit, enough for a few pieces and boxes, £133 for 50 sq ft, as a rough guide for a studio or small one-bedroom flat, and £174 for 75 sq ft, for a two-bedroom flat. Bigger units run to £228 for 100 sq ft, £310 for 150 sq ft and £360 for 200 sq ft.

We bill every four weeks, so six months is six and a half payments: at those middle prices, about £553 for 25 sq ft or £865 for 50 sq ft, before any introductory offer and not counting contents cover. Prices change often, so get a price online for today’s figure at your nearest site.

If that total is more than your keepers would cost to buy again, keep fewer things. If it’s less, storing is the saving.

Making it work

  • There’s no deposit for new customers, and the minimum stay is just two weeks.
  • Your storage carries on until you give notice, normally 14 days, so it fits a savings plan that might take longer than you hope. When your keys arrive, we refund any days you’ve paid for but won’t use.
  • If you clear some things out, you can move to a smaller unit when one’s free, which brings the cost down.
  • Access is 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, so you can collect something you need from home without a fuss.

Pack furniture clean and dry, take beds and tables apart where you can, and use blankets rather than plastic over anything staying for months.
