Stock rotation is the practice of using or selling older stock before newer stock, so nothing sits on the shelf until it’s out of date, faded or unfashionable. The usual rule is “first in, first out” (FIFO): the stock that arrived first goes out first.
At Wigwam
A business storage unit works well as a stockroom if it’s laid out so the oldest stock is the easiest to reach. You can come and go from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, to restock and pick orders.
A layout that makes rotation simple:
- Freestanding shelving in rows, with a clear aisle so you can reach every shelf without moving boxes.
- Load from the back, pick from the front. Put new deliveries behind or above the older stock.
- Date every carton on the side that faces you.
- Keep a simple stock list at the office, or on your phone, so you know what’s in the unit before you visit.
If your stock levels change through the year, you can move to a bigger or smaller unit when one is free, and keep your declared value for contents cover in step with what’s stored.
