Small business rate relief is a reduction in business rates for a business occupying a property with a low rateable value, usually the only property it uses. In England, GOV.UK says you won’t pay business rates on a property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less if it’s the only property your business uses, and for a rateable value of £12,001 to £15,000 the relief goes down gradually from 100% to 0%.
How it works
Relief is handled by your local council, which can tell you whether you’re eligible and how to get it. Using more than one property doesn’t always end it: GOV.UK sets out when relief on your main property can continue after you take on a second one, depending on when you got it and the rateable values involved. You can look up a property’s rateable value on GOV.UK before you sign for it.
At Wigwam
If you rent an indoor unit with us, you don’t pay business rates on it, even when you’re storing business stock. The rates on our storage buildings are our bill, and there’s no separate rates charge in your fees, so relief is one question you don’t have to think about. At Chipping Norton, our prices for units up to 1,000 sq ft include business rates.
If you’re taking an outdoor container or one of our larger warehouse spaces for your business, have a quick word with us first about how rates are handled there. And if you’re weighing up a unit with us against a lock-up of your own, where you’d normally be the one billed, small business rate relief is worth checking with the council before you sign.
