Can I use my storage unit as a business address?

Your business storage unit can be a secure base for your business’s stock, kit and records, but its address can’t be used as your business, registered or mailing address. For that, use your home address, your accountant’s or solicitor’s address with their permission, or a registered office or mail service.

Why a unit can’t take your post

Units are for storage, and we don’t take in or sign for post or parcels on customers’ behalf. Anything addressed to your unit would have nobody to receive it, so letters from Companies House, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or your customers could go astray.

What to use instead

A limited company’s registered office

Companies House needs an address where someone acting for the company will know when post arrives, and where a sender can get confirmation of delivery. The address goes on the public register, so if you’d rather keep your home address private, GOV.UK suggests an accountant’s or solicitor’s address (with their permission) or an agent who provides one.

Sole traders and partnerships

Your trading and correspondence address can be your home or an address service, as long as it’s somewhere you read your post. If you change it, let HMRC know.

Online sellers

Your returns address needs to be somewhere parcels will be received, such as your home or a service that takes them in for you. Your unit then works as your stock room.

Between homes

A friend’s or relative’s address, with their agreement, is the usual stopgap.

Whichever you choose, please make sure we have an address where you’ll get your post too, so our letters about your account reach you.

What your unit is good for

Stock, equipment, display kit and archive boxes are all welcome, and you can come and go during access hours, 6am to 10pm, seven days a week (times can vary slightly by site). If a supplier is dropping stock at your unit, give us a call first and be there to meet them.
