An inventory is a written list of the things you’ve put into storage, ideally with a description, a replacement value and a photo of each item, and a note of which box it’s in. It backs up the value you insure, supports a claim and helps you find things. (In business, “inventory” also means stock held for sale.)
At Wigwam
What you store is private to you. Each unit has its own lock and alarm, and only you and the people you choose can get in, so we don’t keep a list of your belongings. We need just one figure from you: the total cost of replacing everything you’re storing as new, which your declared value is built on. That makes your own inventory the best record there is, and it only takes a little time to make. Our contents protection page explains how our cover works.
How to keep a useful one
Give every box a number, label it on more than one side, and keep a matching list of each box’s number, room and contents. A quick photo of the unit layout on the first day helps too. Add rough values, and photos of anything valuable, and keep receipts or bank statements with it where you have them.
Keep the list at home or on your phone, not in the unit, and update it whenever you add or take things out. It helps you find things without unstacking, keeps your declared value in step with what’s really there, and makes a claim much quicker if you ever need to make one.
If two people’s things share a unit, note whose each item is. And it’s worth telling someone you trust that you have a unit and where you keep your list.
