Is there a weight limit for what I can store?

There’s no set weight limit in our storage agreement, so heavy furniture, white goods, boxes of books and the like are all welcome. For very heavy or unusual items, such as a pallet of stock or materials, a safe, workshop machinery or a grand piano, call us before you book and we’ll help you choose the right unit and floor.

The ground floor is your friend

For the heaviest things, a ground-floor unit makes moving day far easier: no lift or stairs between your vehicle and your door. If you’re storing a range cooker, a cast-iron bath, big wardrobes or a full set of white goods, just ask for a ground-floor unit when you book. Heavy exercise kit such as racks and weights is much the same, and our gym equipment guide covers how to store it.

At Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster you can also rent drive-up units and external containers, where you park right beside the door and load straight in.

Pianos and very heavy single items

For an upright piano, mention it when you book so we can suggest a ground-floor unit. A baby grand or grand piano needs checking with us first, as does anything heavy heading for an upper floor, because the floor, the lift and the route to your unit all need to suit it. Our piano storage guide has more.

Getting heavy things in

Our trolleys are free to use at every site, and some sites also have pallet trucks, so ask us whether yours does. As this is self storage, there’s no forklift and our team don’t load or unload for you. For a heavy item or a pallet delivery, bring a helper or book a haulier with a tail-lift and pallet truck. If you’d rather leave it to the professionals, we can recommend local removals firms. Our guide to storing goods on pallets covers deliveries in detail.

Packing heavy things well

  • Spread dense loads, such as tiles, slabs or boxed stock, across the floor rather than piling them in one spot.
  • Keep the heaviest items at the bottom and near the door, with lighter boxes on top.
  • Pack heavy things like books into smaller boxes, so each one is easy to lift.
  • Never put heavy boxes on top of a piano, a polished table or a chest of drawers.
  • Use free-standing shelving if you like, with the heaviest items on the lowest shelves.

What to tell us

When you call, let us know what the item is, roughly how much it weighs and its measurements, and which floor you’d prefer. We’ll suggest the unit that suits it best.

Call us on 0800 2545585, or get a price online and ask for a ground-floor unit if your heaviest things need one.
