Yes. An upright or digital piano can go in one of our units, ideally on the ground floor, and a grand needs a quick call first so we can check it will fit.
Upright, grand or digital
- Upright pianos fit a larger unit and need about 15 sq ft of floor, with nothing stacked on top. Always store it standing upright, never on its side, because the strings run vertically under tension.
- Baby grands and grands are large and heavy, so they need checking first. Call us with its length, width and height before you book, and we’ll tell you honestly whether one will work.
- Digital pianos store like any electronics: take it off its stand, keep it dry and covered, and lift it off the floor.
Getting it in
A piano is happiest on the ground floor. Drive-up units, where you can park right at the door, are available in a limited number at Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster. Some upper floors are reached by stairs only, so if you’re thinking of an upstairs unit, ask us before you book and we’ll check the route.
Moving a piano is a specialist job, and self storage means our team don’t load or unload. Book movers who have moved pianos before and bring their own piano trolley, and check their insurance covers the building as well as the piano. If you’d like a name, call us and we’ll put you in touch with local removal firms we recommend.
Keeping it in good condition
A piano is mostly wood and felt, and likes steady conditions. Our units are standard self storage rather than climate-controlled, so where it stands and how it’s wrapped do the work:
- stand it against an inside wall where you can, with a gap behind it so air can move;
- ask your movers to set it on boards rather than bare concrete;
- wrap it in heavy furniture blankets, not plastic, with the lid closed;
- for a longer stay, keep a small battery hygrometer on it and look in when you visit.
If yours is a valuable or antique instrument stored through a long winter, a specialist piano store with humidity control may suit it better, and we’d rather you knew that before you book.
Afterwards and cover
Expect an acoustic piano to need tuning when it comes home. Let it settle for a few weeks first, then book the tuner.
Everything stored with us needs to be insured, through our contents protection or your own policy, so include the piano at what a like-for-like replacement would cost. Storing for a few months while you move or downsize is no problem.
For an upright or digital piano, get a price online and choose a ground-floor unit. For a grand, or anything upstairs, call us on 0800 2545585 first.
