Check the label first. Anything that carries the flame symbol, which includes most perfumes and aftershaves, and every aerosol, whatever its label says, needs to stay out of your unit. For toiletries without the flame symbol, ask us before moving day and we’ll tell you. The easiest plan is to pack your bathroom things in a box that travels with you rather than into storage.
What to look for
The flame symbol is a black flame inside a red-edged diamond. It tells you the product can catch fire, and anything that shows it can’t be stored. You’ll often find it on:
- perfume, aftershave and body spray;
- nail varnish and nail varnish remover;
- alcohol-based hand gel;
- reed diffusers and pump sprays.
Aerosols are a separate rule: deodorant, hairspray, dry shampoo, shaving foam and any other pressurised can stays out, even if there’s no flame symbol on it, because each one is a can of gas under pressure.
Why the rule matters
Units sit side by side, so keeping anything that could catch fire, leak or give off fumes out of every unit protects everyone’s belongings, yours included. Strong fragrances can also travel between units, and nothing that gives off a smell can be stored. Every customer agrees to the same rules, so the unit next to yours is held to the same standard as your own.
An easy plan for moving day
- Give the bathroom cabinet a box of its own, with lids tight and bottles upright.
- Take that box in your car to your new home, rather than in the load going to storage.
- Use up, give away or recycle anything you won’t need.
Selling beauty or fragrance products?
If you run a business, the same label check applies to your stock. Empty bottles, jars, packaging and labels are all welcome. Our guide to flammable business stock has a full table, and you can email the product name or a photo of the label to hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk and we’ll confirm before you book.
