Can I store gym equipment in a storage unit?

Yes. Treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines, benches, racks and weights can all be stored with us, so you can win back the room without selling kit you’ll want again. For heavy pieces, ask for a ground-floor unit when you book, and keep weights spread out on the floor rather than piled up high.

Getting heavy kit in

There’s no set weight limit in our storage agreement, so a full set of plates or a multi-gym is welcome. A ground-floor unit means no stairs or lift between your vehicle and your door, and several of our sites have lifts if you’re storing upstairs. Our trolleys are free to use at every site, and some sites have pallet trucks too.

As this is self storage, our team don’t load or unload, so bring a helper for the heaviest pieces, or ask us and we’ll recommend a local removals firm. At Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster you can also rent a drive-up unit and park right beside the door.

Getting each piece ready

  • Treadmills. Unplug it, fold it if it folds, and use the folding lock if it has one, as the manual describes. Our units have no power sockets, so there’s nothing to plug it into while it’s with us.
  • Weights and plates. Wipe them clean and dry, then lay them on the floor, spread out rather than stacked in one tall pile. Never rest them on top of anything else.
  • Benches, racks and multi-gyms. Take them apart where you can, bag the bolts and pins and tape them to the frame, and keep the instructions with them.
  • Bikes and rowers. Wipe them down and let them dry fully before they go in.
  • Covers. A blanket or dust sheet keeps dust and scratches off upholstered seats and pads.

Setting out your unit

Put the heaviest things at the bottom and nearest the door, so they’re easiest to get out again. If you might want something back soon, like the bike when the evenings get lighter, keep it at the front with a clear path to it. If you are still working out how much space it all needs, our home gym storage guide walks through unit sizes from a few weights to a full setup.

Storage, not a workout space

Our units are for storage only, so the training happens at home or at the gym. Most of our units sit side by side in shared buildings, and the noise and vibration of a workout would carry straight through to the neighbours. You’re welcome to visit as often as you like, normally between 6am and 10pm, to swap kit in and out.

Everything you store needs to be insured, through our contents protection or your own policy, so make sure your cover reflects what your equipment is worth.

Tell us what you’re storing, roughly how heavy it is and which floor you’d prefer, and we’ll suggest the right unit. Call us on 0800 2545585, or get a price online.
