We don’t have bins on site, so it’s worth bringing a few bin bags and taking any rubbish home with you. Keeping our sites clear of rubbish keeps pests away and the corridors free, which protects everyone’s belongings, yours included.
Easy ways to deal with it
Most of what builds up on a moving day is packaging, and much of it is worth keeping:
- Boxes you’ll use again. Flatten them and keep them in your unit for your next move. Packing materials you’re keeping aren’t rubbish, so they’re welcome in there.
- Tape, wrap and damaged cardboard. Pop them in a bag and into your recycling at home, or take them to your council’s tip.
- Something still usable. A chair or lamp you no longer want could go to a charity shop, or to a friend or neighbour who’s about to move.
- Bigger items. Most councils will collect things like old sofas or white goods for a fee. If you use a private collector or a skip firm instead, GOV.UK says to check they’re on the register of waste carriers first.
What’s best kept out of your unit
Every site has professional pest control, and keeping rubbish out is a big part of that, so please don’t keep it in your unit to deal with later. Food waste, anything that will rot and anything with a smell can draw in pests, which travel between units, and old paint or fuel tins are flammable, so they can’t be stored at all. If in doubt, take it with you on the day.
If you’re storing for a business
Trade waste and packaging from online orders are business waste, so they go through a registered waste carrier rather than the household tip, which may not accept them. The simplest habit is to take packaging away with you after each visit. GOV.UK’s business waste guide, below, explains what’s needed.
When you move out
On your last visit, bring a broom and a few bags so you can leave the unit empty and swept. Our guide to leaving your unit clean has a short checklist.
