We can, because our security systems record visits to keep everyone’s belongings safe. Beyond our own team, your record is shared only in the limited cases our privacy notice sets out, such as with someone you’ve chosen to deal with your account, or with the police if they’re investigating a crime.
What gets recorded
Our sites are watched around the clock by a professional CCTV monitoring company. The external doors have access control, and every unit has its own alarm, which sets and unsets as you lock and unlock with smart entry (or with your PIN at Chipping Norton). At sites including Reading, Cheltenham and Lincoln, our security systems also log each time a unit is opened.
That record is there to keep the site secure, and to help put things right if anything ever goes wrong.
Who can see it
- Our team, and the firms that run systems for us under contract, who may only use it on our instructions.
- People you choose: someone you’ve named as a contact on your account, or someone acting for you, such as the holder of your power of attorney.
- The police or other authorities, if they’re investigating unlawful activity or the law requires us to share it.
Our privacy notice has the full list and explains how we look after your information.
Getting a copy of your own record
You have the right to a copy of the personal information we hold about you. Call us on 0800 2545585 and tell us the dates you’re interested in. We’ll ask for proof of your identity and address, and in most cases there’s no fee. Organisations usually have one month to respond, so if you need a record from a particular day, it’s worth asking soon.
If someone you’d rather didn’t know is involved
We’re sorry if you’re in that position. You decide who can get into your unit. If you’ve shared smart entry access with someone, or named them as a contact on your account, and that needs to change, call us and we’ll help you take them off.
If you’re worried about your safety, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and confidential, day and night, on 0808 2000 247. In an emergency, call 999.
For businesses
A unit access log is especially useful if your business needs to keep track of who went in and when. If you plan to rely on it for staff visits, ask us what your site’s log shows before you book.
