Plan around your builder’s programme, then add a few weeks’ slack for weather, deliveries and finishing. With us you don’t actually have to pick an end date: the minimum stay is two weeks, and after that your storage carries on until you give notice, normally 14 days. So if the build runs over, nothing needs rearranging.
Working out your timing
Ask your builder for a written programme, and look at three stretches:
- Before work starts. Clear the rooms next to the build a week or so ahead, so the trades can start on day one.
- The build itself. This is the part that can slip. Groundwork, weather and waiting for materials all add time, so don’t plan on the best case.
- After handover. Plastering, decorating and new flooring often come last, and furniture is best kept away until the dust has gone. Plan to bring things home once the room is finished, not when the walls go up.
Why you don’t need a fixed date
- Book from two weeks. After that, storage carries on, paid every four weeks.
- Leave when you’re ready. Email us your end date, normally with 14 days’ notice, once you know when the room will be finished.
- Only pay for what you use. Once the unit is empty and checked, we refund any days you’ve paid for but won’t use.
- If the build overruns after you’ve given notice, call us before your end date and we’ll agree a later one with you in writing.
What to put in storage
Take out what would get dusty or in the way: furniture from the rooms being knocked through, rugs, soft furnishings, pictures and anything fragile. Keep out what you’ll use every day while the work goes on. Wrap furniture in breathable covers rather than sealed plastic for a longer stay, and make sure everything goes in clean and dry.
You can visit from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, if you need something back mid-build. Every unit has its own alarm, and our sites are watched by CCTV monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company.
