Start early, listen more than you talk, and let your parent lead the decisions. Their belongings hold their life’s memories, so the conversation goes best when it’s about what they want their next home to feel like, not about getting rid of things. Go one room at a time, and keep “not sure yet” as a real option rather than forcing every decision at once.
Before you start
- Pick a calm moment. Not in the middle of a crisis, and not on a rushed visit. A cup of tea at the kitchen table works better than a phone call.
- Talk about the future, not the clutter. “What would make the new place feel like home?” opens a better conversation than “You’ll never fit all this in.”
- Agree who’s involved. If you have brothers or sisters, talk to each other first so your parent isn’t caught between different views.
During the conversation
- Ask about the stories. Asking where a piece came from often helps your parent decide what really matters, and the stories are worth hearing anyway.
- Let them choose first. Ask what they’d most like to take with them, then work outwards. Things they choose to keep are a win, not a failure.
- Offer, don’t take. If a grandchild would love the dresser, let your parent offer it. Giving things to family can be a pleasure rather than a loss.
- Accept “not now”. If a conversation becomes upsetting, stop and come back to it another day.
When decisions are hard
Some pieces your parent can’t take but isn’t ready to part with. Rushing those decisions is often where families fall out. A storage unit can hold the “not sure yet” pile while your parent settles into their new home, and you can revisit it together later, when it feels less raw.
Storage with us keeps that option open without a long commitment. The minimum stay is just two weeks, and after that it carries on until you give notice, normally 14 days, with any unused days refunded. You can rent the unit in your own name, and share access with brothers and sisters, so everyone can visit between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week. Treasured keepsakes that could never be replaced, such as a wedding ring or a bundle of letters, are best kept close, at home with the family.
If you’d like to talk it through, call us on 0800 2545585. We’re happy to help you work out how much space the “not sure yet” pile needs.
