Can I put my furniture in storage while my house is renovated?

Yes, and it’s a good way to keep your furniture clean and out of the builders’ way. Our shortest stay is two weeks, you can get to your things seven days a week if you need something mid-build, and when the work’s done you give us 14 days’ notice and we refund any unused days.

Book before the trades arrive

The easiest renovations start with empty rooms. Book your unit for a few days before the builders are due, so you can move furniture out without a rush. If you are not sure how long the work will take, our guide to booking storage for an extension explains how to plan your stay. If you know your dates early, you can reserve a unit in advance for £10, which comes off your first payment when you move in.

Choosing the right size

Think about what’s leaving the house, not the whole house: one room’s furniture for a kitchen refit, or most of a floor for bigger work. Our team are good at working out the space you’ll need, so call us with a rough list, or compare unit sizes. If the work grows, you can move to a bigger or smaller unit when one’s available.

Getting to your things mid-build

Customers can get in from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week (Cheltenham’s hours differ slightly), so it’s easy to fetch a box of winter clothes or the spare chairs on a weekend. Keep the things you’ll want near the front of the unit.

How long it lasts

If the work runs over, that’s fine. Your storage simply carries on, paid every four weeks, until you give notice. Once you know the finish date, email us at hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk. Notice is normally 14 days, and you only pay up to your end date.

Two things to plan for

  • Contents cover. Your belongings need cover for as long as they’re stored. You can take ours, or use your own policy and send us proof within 14 days of moving in for a full refund of our cover charge.
  • Leftover decorating supplies. Paint, solvents and fuel can’t go in the unit, as flammable items put everyone’s belongings at risk, so keep those at home or in the garage.

Pack furniture clean and dry under breathable covers. There are free trolleys at every site, and we can recommend local removals and man-and-van firms if you’d like help with the heavy pieces.
