Are my belongings covered while I’m moving them into the unit?

Our contents protection starts the moment you place your things in storage and stays in place until you take them out. For the journey itself, the cover that counts is your removal firm’s insurance or your own home insurance, so a quick check with them before moving day is well worth it.

Three quick checks before moving day

If a removal firm or a man and van is moving you, ask what their insurance covers, up to what value, and whether it lasts until your things are inside the unit or stops at the van. Ask too how long you’d have to report any damage.

If you’re moving it yourself, ask your home insurer whether your contents policy covers belongings while they’re being moved. Not every policy covers a move you do yourself, and if yours doesn’t, your insurer or a broker may be able to offer cover just for the trip.

If you’ve hired or borrowed a van, check whether the van’s insurance covers the things you’re carrying, rather than assuming it does.

It also helps to photograph anything valuable or fragile before it leaves home, and to keep any removal paperwork until you’ve checked everything in the unit.

Making moving day easier

Every site has free parking while you unload and free trolleys to use, so you’re not carrying heavy things further than you need to. If you’d like help with the lifting, we can recommend local removals and man and van firms; just call or email us.

If a removal crew is bringing your things, someone from your side needs to be there to let them in and show them your unit. That could be you, or a friend or relative you’ve given access to. It’s also the best moment to tick items off the firm’s list and note any damage before you sign.

Getting your cover right from day one

Everyone storing with us needs contents protection: either ours, or your own policy if it covers goods kept in self storage. If you take ours first and then send us proof of your own cover within 14 days of moving in, we’ll refund the contents protection charges in full.

Declare the full replacement value of everything you’ll store, including anything still to come on later trips. Our guide to how much contents cover you need shows you how to work it out.

If something gets damaged

We’re sorry if it does. Damage on the journey is a claim on your removal firm’s cover or your own insurer, under their terms. Once your things are in storage with our cover, email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk asking us to start a claim, and see how to make a claim for the steps.
