If you’ll need the space for years and you’re storing garden kit you use every week, a shed you own is a one-off cost, so it can work out cheaper than paying every four weeks. If you’re storing furniture, boxes or anything you’d hate to see spoilt, or you only need the space for a while, a storage unit is often the better value, because you pay only for the weeks you use.
What a shed really costs
The price tag is only part of it. Add the base it stands on, delivery and putting it up, a good lock, and looking after it over the years. It also needs the garden room, and it stays in your garden after the need has passed. Get two or three full quotes before you compare.
What a unit costs
On our price lists in October 2026, the middle price for a 25 sq ft unit was £85 every four weeks, and for a 50 sq ft unit £133. We bill every four weeks, so a year is 13 payments: £1,105 for 25 sq ft, or £1,729 for 50 sq ft, before any offer. Our prices change often, and our sites often run an introductory offer, so get a price online for today’s figure near you.
New customers pay no deposit, and the total in your quote is what you pay. Your things need contents cover, through our contents protection or your own policy. The shortest stay is two weeks, and when you’re done you give notice, normally 14 days, and we refund any unused days.
Security and keeping things dry
If you choose a shed, police crime prevention advice from Cheshire Police suggests a good padlock with no exposed screws, checking the hinges can’t simply be removed, a battery shed alarm, and marking your tools with your name or postcode.
With us, every unit has its own alarm, the external doors have access control, and our CCTV is monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company. Whichever you choose, pack fabrics and paper clean and completely dry, and avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
The fair answer
You may find the answer is both: a shed for the mower and the tools you reach for each weekend, and a unit for the sofa, the spare bed and the boxes. Fuel cans and gas bottles can’t come into storage, but a petrol mower is welcome once it’s been run completely dry.
