If you’re running out of space at home, planning a move, or need somewhere secure for business stock, self storage can offer the extra room you need. This guide breaks down what you can expect to pay for self storage across the UK in 2025, with real examples to help you budget.

Prices depend on your location, the size of unit you choose, and the type of storage available. Whether it’s a small indoor space for a few boxes or a larger drive-up unit for furniture or business stock, costs can vary widely. We’ll explore the typical weekly rates, what influences them, and what to look out for when choosing a storage provider.

But First: What We Offer You at Wigwam Self Storage

Wigwam Self Storage offers modern, secure and affordable storage across 14 convenient locations including Alton, Bath, Bromsgrove, Burton-on-Trent, Cheltenham, Chipping Norton, Dorking, Leatherhead, Lincoln, Reading, Shipston-on-Stour, Tewkesbury, Warminster and Marlow (coming soon). Most of our units are purpose-built inside clean, well-lit warehouses.

At selected sites like Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour, we also offer drive-up units and external containers. Whether you’re storing household items or business stock, we make it easy to find the right space at the right price.

The Benefits Of Our Self Storage Solutions

Unlike our self storage units, our storage containers offer convenient drive-up access, allowing customers to easily load and unload goods straight into their containers.

Here are a few other benefits of our container storage hire service:

  • Short and long term container storage options
  • Domestic and commercial storage packages
  • Free access, 7 days a week
  • Packaging materials and padlocks for sale
  • Access controlled with 24-hour CCTV surveillance
  • Convenient drive-up unit access

Factors Affecting Self Storage Prices:

1. Storage Unit Size

Storage units range from compact lockers to large warehouse-style spaces, and prices are typically calculated per square foot. While smaller units have a lower total cost, they often work out more expensive per square foot.

Larger units offer better value for money in terms of space, even though the overall price is higher. Choosing the right size for your needs is key to keeping costs down without paying for space you don’t need.

2. Location

Where your storage facility is located has a major impact on the price you’ll pay. Units in busy city centres generally cost more, and as you move away from major urban areas and into the Midlands or the North, prices generally drop. Comparing rates across different regions can help you find better value for your budget.

3. Length of Stay

How long you plan to use storage can have a big impact on the overall cost. Many providers offer short-term deals like 50% off for the first 8 weeks, which is ideal if you only need space for a month or two.

For longer stays, discounts or loyalty rates are often available, especially if you’re committing to six months or more. It’s also worth asking about special offers for NHS staff, teachers, military personnel, or emergency service workers, as many companies provide additional savings for these groups.

4. Amenities and Services

Today’s self storage facilities are more advanced than ever, and the added features can influence the price. Many UK providers now offer 24-hour access, climate control and phone-based keyless entry as standard features.

5. Insurance and Security

Most storage providers require you to purchase insurance for your belongings, either by using their own cover options like Enhanced Liability or through a third-party insurance policy.

The total insurance cost usually depends on the replacement value of what you’re storing. While serious incidents are uncommon, it’s important to make sure your items are fully protected.

Self Storage Prices in the UK

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to self storage pricing. What you pay depends on where you are, how much space you need, and what features the facility offers. On average, a standard 25 sq ft unit might cost anywhere from £12 to £45 per week, depending on location. Units in or near major cities tend to sit at the higher end of that range, while storage in smaller towns or rural areas is usually more affordable.

Wigwam Self Storage keeps pricing competitive across all of our locations, with clean, secure and flexible units available in Bromsgrove, Burton-on-Trent, Lincoln, Shipston-on-Stour, and Chipping Norton. We offer a variety of unit sizes to suit personal and business storage needs, and our expert team can help you choose the right space so you’re not paying for more than you need.

Tech-Powered Security: Why Smarter Storage Is Worth the Price

While prices vary, features like 24-hour access, keyless entry or enhanced security may influence the rate. According to the 2025 SSA UK Annual Report, more UK facilities are adding biometric access, AI-monitored CCTV and smart pricing tools. These upgrades offer added convenience and protection, which many customers see as worth the slight increase in cost.

What’s Typically Included?

What’s Typically Included in Self Storage?

Standard rental includes your chosen unit size, access during opening hours, and built-in security such as alarm systems. Some providers may charge extra for items like padlocks, insurance or extended access, so it’s always worth checking what’s included in your rate.

Additional Costs to Consider

Additional Costs to Consider when using self storage

While your rental fee covers the basics, there are several additional costs to keep in mind:

Contents Protection (Insurance)

All customers are required to have contents protection in place.

You can choose Wigwam’s cover, which is charged based on the maximum replacement value of your items.

If you prefer to use your own insurance, you can provide proof within 14 days, and we’ll refund the charge in full. We recommend starting with our cover to ensure your items are protected from day one.

Payment Terms

At Wigwam, our minimum storage period is 2 weeks. Payments are taken every 4 weeks by card or Direct Debit. Cash and cheque payments are not accepted

Padlocks

Most of our facilities use a Mobile Smart Entry System, which is free of charge and doesn’t require a padlock. Only one location still uses padlocks, so it’s best to check when booking.

Packing Materials

Items like boxes, tape and bubble wrap are not included in the rental. These can be purchased at Wigwam’s on-site packaging shop

Transport and Moving Costs

The cost of getting your items to the facility is not included. Whether you use your own vehicle, a man-and-van service, or a removals company, transport is an added expense
