Yes. Freestanding shelving, racking and tool chests are welcome, and they’re a great way to use the height of your unit and keep everything easy to find. The one rule is that nothing is fixed to the walls, floor or ceiling, so choose units that stand safely on their own.
Why nothing is fixed
When you move out, we ask you to leave your unit clean and in the same condition as when you moved in, ready for the next customer. With freestanding shelving, there’s nothing to undo: you simply take it with you.
Choosing shelving that stands well
- Pick sturdy, freestanding units with a wide, level base, and check they don’t wobble before you load them.
- Put the heaviest things on the lowest shelves and lighter boxes higher up, so the shelving stays stable.
- Stand shelving against a wall, just without fixing it.
- Keep a small step stool in the unit rather than climbing the shelves or standing on boxes.
There’s no set weight limit in our storage agreement, so books, files and boxed stock are all fine. For very heavy loads, pallets of stock, or racking for an upper-floor unit, call us before you book and we’ll help you choose the right unit and floor. Our guide to weight in a storage unit has more.
Making the most of the height
Heights vary between our sites and units. Before you buy shelving, measure its full height and call us with the figure, and we’ll check it against the unit you’re looking at. At Lincoln, some second-floor units are listed as restricted height, so ask us before choosing one of those for tall racking.
Leave an aisle so you can reach the back without unloading the front, and keep the things you need most near the door. Anything with a built-in battery, such as an e-bike or cordless tools, shouldn’t be stacked at all, so give it its own space with air around it.
For business stock and archives
Shelving turns a unit into a tidy stockroom or archive. Label each shelf, and you or a colleague with shared access can find things in a minute.
If your needs change once you’re set up, you can move to a bigger or smaller unit at your site when one’s free.
