In our size guide, a small unit is about 25 sq ft, a medium unit about 75 sq ft and a large unit about 100 sq ft, with a medium-small size of 50 sq ft and an extra-large size of 150 sq ft in between and above. As a rough guide, small suits a spare room, medium a two-bedroom flat and large a two- or three-bedroom house.
The sizes at a glance
| What we call it | Floor area | Roughly holds |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 25 sq ft (about 2.3 m²) | a spare room’s worth, a few boxes or seasonal kit |
| Medium-small | 50 sq ft (about 4.6 m²) | a studio or one-bedroom flat |
| Medium | 75 sq ft (about 7 m²) | a two-bedroom flat, or clearing two rooms |
| Large | 100 sq ft (about 9.3 m²) | the contents of a two- or three-bedroom house |
| Extra large | 150 sq ft (about 13.9 m²) | a four-bedroom house, or a full contents move |
These are rough guides, not promises: two homes with the same number of bedrooms can fill very different amounts of space.
The quick way to choose
Count the rooms you’re clearing rather than guessing at square feet:
- One room, or some boxes and loose items: start with a small unit.
- Two or three rooms: start with a medium unit.
- Four or more rooms, or a whole house: think large.
Then check your biggest pieces. A large sofa, a dining table or a set of white goods can’t be stacked on, so a couple of them can move you up a size. Our room-by-room size guide walks you through it.
Smaller and larger than the labels
The labels cover the main sizes, but they’re not the whole range. On our October 2026 price lists, sizes run from spaces of 10 sq ft or less, handy for a few boxes, suitcases or important papers, up to 450 sq ft for the biggest jobs. Our price lists also include in-between sizes, such as 35 or 125 sq ft, so you can get close to the space you need. The sizes on offer vary from site to site, and not every size shows in our online quote, so if you can’t see the one you want, just ask.
Go by the square feet
“Small”, “medium” and “large” are handy shorthand, but the square feet are what you’re actually renting. When you compare, compare the floor area, and remember that you can stack upwards too.
