It might, and it’s well worth checking before you pay for cover twice. Home insurance policies vary on whether they cover belongings kept away from your home, so the answer is in your own policy, and if it covers self storage for the full value of what you’re storing, you’re welcome to use it with us. If your claim follows a flood or fire, see using self storage while your home is repaired.
How to check your policy
Look in your policy wording for the section on belongings away from the home, and for anything that mentions storage. Then ask your insurer three simple questions:
- Does my policy cover my things while they’re in a self storage unit, and for how long?
- Is there a limit on what it will pay for belongings away from home, and is that enough for everything I’m storing?
- Which risks does it cover there, such as fire, water damage and theft?
Home insurance doesn’t pay above the limits set in the policy, so the amount matters as much as the yes. If you’re storing stock or equipment for a business, ask your business insurer too, as home contents cover is designed for your personal belongings.
What we’ll need from you
If your policy does cover storage, send us proof of your cover by email to hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk. If you’re not sure what to send, give us a call and we’ll tell you what we need.
Still waiting to hear? Start with ours
Everything stored with us needs cover, either our contents protection or your own policy, so that if the unexpected ever happens you’re not left out of pocket. If your insurer hasn’t come back to you yet, we’d suggest taking our contents protection when you move in, so your things are protected from day one. Send us proof of your own cover within 14 days of moving in and we’ll refund the contents protection charges in full.
Our contents protection is made for belongings in storage. It covers things such as fire, storm, burst pipes and water leaks, and theft involving forced entry, and it starts the moment your things go into storage. Because it’s separate from your home insurance, a claim on it won’t affect your home policy’s no-claims record.
Whichever cover you choose, you’ll declare what it would cost to replace everything you store. Our guide to how much contents cover you need shows you how to work it out.
