Your post is best sent to your home, a friend’s address or a parcel locker, or passed on with Royal Mail’s Redirection service, because a storage unit can’t be used as a postal address and we can’t sign for or take in post on your behalf. What does work is a delivery you meet yourself: a supplier, shop or courier dropping off at a time when you’re at your unit to take it in.
Why post doesn’t go to a unit
A unit is somewhere to keep your belongings, not an address, and nobody is waiting at your unit door to receive a letter or parcel. Sending your post somewhere it will be taken in safely means nothing important goes astray.
If you’re between homes
When everything you own is in storage for a while, your post still needs somewhere to land. These work well:
- Royal Mail Redirection sends post from your old address on to a new one, and you can use it when you’re moving temporarily as well as for good. The Royal Mail website has the current prices and options.
- A friend or family member’s address, with their agreement, can take your post, and it can also be where your redirection points while you’re between homes.
- A parcel locker or collection point keeps parcels safe until you collect them. Many retailers let you choose one at checkout.
Deliveries you meet at your unit
If you’re buying furniture or receiving stock, you can have it brought to the site, as long as you, or someone you’ve given access, is there to meet the driver and take it straight into your unit. Book the delivery for a time you’ll be on site, within access hours (normally 6am to 10pm). For a pallet or a large lorry, call us before you book so we can check the delivery will work at your site.
Selling online
Your unit is a good home for stock, but your returns address and the address on your listings need to be somewhere parcels can be received, such as your home or a parcel-handling service. Our guide to using a storage unit as a business address has some good options.
