A 20ft container is a standard steel shipping container, about 20ft long and 8ft wide on the outside (6.06m by 2.44m), used as a storage unit. The steel walls take up a little room, so the floor inside is slightly smaller: one container supplier gives about 19ft 3in by 7ft 7in, or roughly 150 sq ft. As a storage unit it’s usually drive-up, so you park at the doors and load straight in.
At Wigwam
We have 20ft storage containers at Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour, listed as 160 sq ft (20ft x 8ft), and larger 40ft containers at Warminster. One can comfortably hold the contents of a three-bedroom home, or a 7.5-tonne lorry load, which makes it a good fit for a whole-house move, a renovation or bulky business equipment.
Because they’re drive-up, you can bring your car or van right to the doors, and you can get to them between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week. At Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour, our containers sit in an access-controlled compound monitored by CCTV, and we insulate them to help stop condensation. Make sure everything goes in clean and completely dry, and our guide to condensation in container units has simple packing tips.
Checking the fit
If a tight fit matters, measure your longest item, your tallest item standing up and the widest thing that has to go through the door. Call us on 0800 2545585 with those figures and we’ll help you check the container you’d be renting. If a 20ft container is more than you need, Chipping Norton also has 80 sq ft (10ft x 8ft) containers.
