Downsizing is moving to a smaller home or smaller premises, so the contents have to be cut down to what the new space can hold. It often means deciding, piece by piece, what to keep, what to pass to family and what to sell or give away.
At Wigwam
Deciding what to keep is often harder than the move itself, and a storage unit gives you time. If you are moving to a retirement flat, working out how much furniture will fit is a good place to start. It earns its place for the things you can’t decide about yet: furniture that may or may not fit the new rooms, pieces the family hasn’t collected, or a gap between selling one home and moving into the next. For things you know you won’t use again, selling or giving them away usually makes more sense.
Our downsizing checklist suggests about 25 to 50 sq ft for the store pile from a one or two-bedroom flat, and 75 to 100 sq ft from a three-bedroom house. On our October 2026 price lists, the middle price every four weeks was about £85 for 25 sq ft, £133 for 50 sq ft, £174 for 75 sq ft and £228 for 100 sq ft. Prices change often, and your site may have an introductory offer, so get a price online for today’s figure.
It stays flexible, too. New customers don’t pay a deposit, the minimum stay is two weeks, and notice to leave is normally 14 days, with any unused days refunded. If you clear some of the unit, you can move to a smaller one when one’s free.
Downsizing for a parent
If you hold a registered lasting power of attorney for your parent’s property and financial affairs, you can rent the unit in your name as their attorney. If your parent can no longer make decisions and nobody holds one, have a quick word with a solicitor before you book.
